"Get in on the Act" - Caithness businesses welcome breastfeeding mums.

A Highland-wide campaign is being run this year to encourage cafe's, restaurants and other public places to welcome breastfeeding mothers to their premises.

The campaign is called "Get In on the Act", which reflects the fact that under the Breastfeeding Scotland Act 2005 it is now an offence to stop anyone from breastfeeding their baby (under the age of two) in a public place.

Businesses that sign up to the scheme display this eye-catching sticker in their window to show that all their staff know the law and breastfeeding mothers can feel assured that they are welcome to breastfeed there.

If you run a business and would like to join in please contact Janet Kellock or Karen Mackay on 01463 704842 karen.mackay3@nhs.net

Breastfeeding Awareness Week
11th-17th May 2008
"Breastfeeding: Every Day makes a difference to your baby"

Breastfeeding Awareness Week is a national annual event that has been run by the Department of Health since 1993 to highlight the fact that breastfeeding is the healthiest feeding option for babies and mothers.  The campaign encourages women to recognize their right to breastfeed at any time in any place.  This year the focussed on encouraging women to access the support that will help them to breastfeed for longer.  Every day you breastfeed makes a difference to your baby.

Local Events:

Stall in Thurso Precinct

It was a beautiful sunny day for the community midwives' wonderful stall in the pedestrian precinct in Thurso on Saturday 17th May.   The stall aimed to promote breastfeeding and celebrate Breastfeeding Awareness Week.  There was a bookstand with copies of all the new breastfeeding books that are available for mums to borrow from the community midwives.   There were leaflets and information to take away, including lovely hemp bags promoting breastfeeding in the Highlands.  Copies of the new "Fone-A-Friend Breastfeeding Directory"  were on show and all the mums that looked through it thought it was a fantastic idea.  If anyone would like a copy of the directory, please contact us and we can post one out to you.  The free balloons were a big hit with all the kids passing by.

Photoshoots at local cafes

The photoshoots in Wick and in Thurso cafe's involving new mums and their babies were a huge success, and resulted in a fantastic front-page article in the Caithness Courier on Wednesday May 14th 2008.   Many thanks to the community midwives for organising it all, and well done to all the mums that were involved - they really did a fantastic job of making breastfeeding seem like a normal, everyday thing in Caithness.
